As places begin to open up more despite the rising cases of coronavirus in the US, we all could use an immune system boost. This ginger turmeric immune boost juice packs all the nutrients you need to combat any cold symptoms while building your immune system and it is delicious; I can drink it until it burns and I have to stop. I can hardly call this a recipe because I had a hard time creating exact measurements. Instead consider it a guide on how to make this juice your own. To make this recipe more convincing, I’ll give some of the benefits of the ingredients that I will use in this juice.

ginger-root
Ginger
  • It is an anti-inflammatory which alone makes it beneficial in many ways including reducing menstrual cramps and other types of pains as well as improving brain function and reducing the risks of diseases such as cancer and Alzheimer’s
  • It fights infections, which makes it great for colds
  • It relieves muscle pain, so it is helpful for athletes and people suffering from arthritis
  • It helps combats nausea and it helps with digestion after meals
  • It can help regulate blood sugar
  • It helps prevent heart disease
turmeric root
Turmeric
  • It is also an anti-inflammatory, meaning it has similar if not all of the great benefits that I listed above for ginger
  • It helps fight viral infections
  • It may protect against heart disease
  • It protects your body from free radicals
  • It may improve skin health
  • It may help in treating depression
  • It may help in treating diabetes
lemon
Lemon
  • It is a good source of vitamin C
  • It helps clear up your skin
  • It aids with digestion
  • It helps control weight
  • It helps with digestion
Black-pepper
Black Pepper
  • It has anti-inflammatory components as well
  • It is high in antioxidants
  • It has a lot of other benefits but the main reason black pepper is in this recipe is because it helps the body absorb more of the nutrients in turmeric so together they are a great pair
cayenne
Cayenne
  • It may boost your metabolism
  • It may help reduce pain
  • It may lower blood pressure
  • It may help in digestion
Honey
Honey
  • It can help suppress coughs
  • It helps fight infections
  • It helps prevent acid reflux
  • It is a more beneficial sweetener than sugar but if you want you can omit it all together in this recipe

And apart from boosting your overall immune system and helping prevent diseases, these ingredients have many other benefits. I could go into detail about the components in these ingredients that make them beneficial for specific ailments or functions but this is not a science blog and I am tired of typing 😆 But if you are not convinced by my bullet points or would simply like to learn more please go ahead and read up on the benefits of these ingredients. I’ve included some links below.

Again, this is a guide. In other words, I didn’t measure anything, these measurements are estimates. You may find you want to put more or less of any of the ingredients. So do as much tasting and adjusting as you need to get a result you will enjoy.

Warning: Turmeric is often used as a natural dye. In other words, get ready to turn everything that they touch orange. My hands were orange for a while (you can use gloves) and my cheesecloth will never recover.

Equipment

  • cheesecloth or fine mesh strainer

Ingredients

  • 1 cup fresh ginger peeled and chopped
  • 1/2 cup fresh turmeric peeled and chopped
  • 2-4 lemons, juiced
  • 1 tsp black pepper
  • 1 tsp cayenne pepper optional
  • honey to taste you can start with 1/3 cup
  • 6-10 cups drinking water

Instructions

  • Blend ginger and turmeric with 2 to 4 cups of water. The more water you use before straining, the more flavor and nutrients you can extract from the ginger and turmeric.
  • Using a cheesecloth or a fine mesh strainer, strain blended mixture into a large bowl.
  • Add lemon juice, black pepper, cayenne, honey and about 3 to 4 cups of water. Stir and taste. You can add more lemon juice if you want it to be more tart, more cayenne or black pepper if you want more of a kick, more honey if you want it sweeter and more water if the mixture is too strong and you want to dilute it.
  • Continue to adjust as needed then when ready, pour into a pitcher and store in the refrigerator. You can enjoy this cold like juice or hot like tea. It will keep in the refrigerator for up to a week. Enjoy and stay healthy!
