Chances are you probably already have most of these ingredients at home. You may need to get some whole wheat flour then you will be set for a while. Unlike my Sweet Brioche Buns which is on the richer side, this Honey Whole Wheat Bread is a good every day bread. The whole grains make it more nutritious and filling so you can had it at more meals. You can make sandwiches, toast it and add toppings of your choice, have it with a salad and more. It is pretty straight forward but before you make it, read the bread making tips below.

A Few Bread Making Tips
  • Make sure your yeast is still active. If your yeast doesn’t foam up/bubble during the proofing process, it may be dead. Storing your yeast in the fridge helps preserve it longer.
  • You may add a little sugar (about 1/4 tsp) to your water and yeast mixture to feed the yeast but never add any salt to your yeast. This will kill it.
  • To get a soft, glutinous bread, knead your dough until it can easily form a smooth ball. This will typically take about 5 minutes. You may not get a stretchy dough with whole wheat flour but kneading it thoroughly is still important.

Ingredients

  • 1 1/2 cups warm water
  • 2 1/4 tsps yeast
  • 3 tbsps butter melted
  • 1/4 cup honey
  • 3 to 3 1/2 cups whole wheat flour
  • 3/4 tsp salt

Instructions

  • Add water and yeast to a bowl. Mix and set aside for about 5 minutes or until yeast has proofed.
  • In a large bowl or standing mixer, add melted butter and honey then mix together.
  • Next add whole wheat flour and salt starting with about 3 cups. Knead for about 3 to 5 minutes or until the dough forms a smooth ball. If the dough is too sticky, you may knead in some more flour.
  • Place in a greased bowl, cover and let in rise for about an hour in a warm place.
  • Once the dough has doubled in size, punch the air out of it then place it in a greased loaf pan. Cover and let it proof for another 30 minutes.
  • Preheat your oven to 350ºF about 15 minutes before your dough is done proofing.
  • Once your dough has proofed, remove the cover and bake it in the oven for about 40 to 50 minutes or until the dough is brown and sounds hollow when tapped in the center.
  • Let it cool for a few minutes then slice into it and enjoy!
